Types of Membership with the Association of Canada Lands Surveyors

 

The Association of Canada Lands Surveyors (ACLS) is the national licensing body responsible for regulating the profession of surveying on Canada Lands. Our membership categories are designed to reflect varying levels of qualification, involvement, and interest in the profession.

 

Below is a summary of the types of memberships available:

 

1. Regular Member

Who can apply:
Individuals who have received a Canada Lands Surveyor (CLS) Commission and have taken the oath of office.

 

Privileges:

  • Can apply for a License to practice cadastral (legal boundary) surveying on Canada Lands.

  • Eligible to vote in Association elections and on bylaw changes.

  • Eligible to hold office and serve on committees.

  • Subject to the ACLS mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Practice Review programs.

2. Associate Member

Who can apply:
Individuals who have interest  in the surveying profession.

 

Privileges:

  • May use the title “Associate Member of the ACLS”.

  • Access to member communications, events, and professional development.

  • Not Commissioned or licensed to practice or sign legal survey documents.

3. Honorary Life Member

Who qualifies:
Individuals who have held a CLS Commission or Dominion Land Surveyor (DLS)  Commission for at least 20 years and who has rendered signal service to the ACLS. 

 

Privileges:

  • Recognition and honorary status.

  • No annual dues.

  • Has voting rights and can apply for a licence to practice.

4. Honorary Member

Who qualifies:
Individuals who is not a Canada Lands Surveyor and who has rendered eminent service to the surveying profession.

 

Privileges:

  • Recognition and honorary status.

  • No annual dues.

  • Has a right to attend all general meetings of Members and may speak to any motion being considered at a meeting but may not vote.

  • Not Commissioned or licensed to practice or sign legal survey documents.

5.  Retire Member

Who can apply:
Commissioned regular members who have officially retired from active practice but wish to maintain a connection to the Association.

 

Privileges:

  • May attend ACLS meetings and events.

  • May receive communications and publications.

  • Not permitted to practice.

6. Student Member

Who can apply:
Individuals currently a candidate for a commission, or a student of any branch of geomatics.

 

Privileges:

  • Free membership.

  • Access to resources, student outreach events, and mentorship opportunities.

  • Has a right to attend all general meetings of Members and may speak to any motion being considered at a meeting but may not vote.
  • Not Commissioned or licensed to practice or sign legal survey documents.
