Complaints
Complaints Procedure
To file a complaint against a CLS, please submit a formal, written complaint addressed to the Registrar. Your submission must:
- Clearly explain the nature of your concern
- Provide a chronological account of relevant events
- Include copies of all supporting documents or evidence
To ensure completeness, please download, print, and complete the ACLS Complaints Form, and include it with your materials.
If the Registrar determines the evidence does not warrant a formal complaint, you may be offered alternative ways to address your concerns. You may also insist that your complaint proceed to the Complaints Committee.
There is no fee to file a complaint.
All complaints are held in the strictest confidence by ACLS staff and Complaints Committee members, although a copy will be forwarded to the CLS in question so they can respond.
Composition of the Complaints Committee
- Members: ACLS members plus one lay member of Council

How the Process Works
- Registrar’s Initial Review
The Registrar checks that your letter and supporting materials are clear and complete. - Notification & Response
- The Registrar sends your complaint to the CLS named in the complaint.
- The CLS has at least two weeks to respond in writing, providing all relevant information.
- Rebuttal (if needed)
The Registrar may invite you to reply to the CLS’s response. - Committee Review
At its next meeting, the Complaints Committee examines all written submissions. Neither party is required to attend or speak at this meeting. - Possible Committee Actions
- Request additional information or interviews with either party
- Direct how the complaint should be resolved
- Dismiss the complaint
- Refer part or all of the matter to the Discipline Committee
- Outcome Notification
The Committee’s decision and rationale are sent by registered mail to both you and the CLS.
Important Note: If your case is referred to the Discipline Committee, you may be asked to testify.
All complaints must be submitted in writing and delivered to:
